money, we've got the debt ceiling argument coming up here. the government's going to run out of money at the end of february if something isn't done. do you see more of the same what we saw during this fiscal cliff or is this something better on the horizon. >> wouldn't that be great if i could say yes but i can't say yes. remember when the election ended and it looked like this was going to be an era of compromise. john boehner came out and said of course we want to work with the president. the president said of course we want to work with the public. that was shattered within about 20 minutes after both men said that. and so i don't think we're looking at compromise anywhere, it's really about who can get their way by trying to intimidate the other side more. so democrats not the president but other democrats saying hey here's a way that's not compromise. we're going to print a coin, a trill undollar coinen dollar coin. think of this sort of establishment republican saying how about a partialual shut down of the government to get what we wa

the debt ceiling is note the problem, bob. it's the fact they've been spending about $1 trillion more than they're take next. i think most folks are tired of not only the games in washington, shutting down the world war ii memorial, and more importantly, which is why the tea party took off is they think washington is ignoring the underlying problems of spending too much money. >> schieffer: if i could interject. i think you may have a problem coming that may be worse than all of that. if the government has to default on its debts and the term, "full faith and credit of the united states government" is no longer operative, if that happens we're going to plunge off into the unknown. nobody knows what the impact of that will be on not just our economy but the world economy. would you be willing to let that happen in order to postpone obamacare, which you haven't been able to do. obamacare marches on, not marching very well right now, but obamacare has started. and all of the rest of this is happening. are you willing to let that

and i hope when it comes to the debt ceiling we will do the same thing, extend the debt ceiling without endangering the economy. then if the republicans want to sit down and go into serious good faith negotiations, over any aspect of government, that is how it should take place. >> schieffer: all right. well, senator durbin i want to thank you for joining us this morning, and we will stay tuned. thank so much. we will be back in one minute with more on the budget impasse. >> schieffer: we are back with two key members of the house budget committee, tennessee republican marsha blackburn and chris van hollen, i am not sure i need to ask either of you a question. we just heard the questions laid out from rand paul and dick durbin, so where do you go from here, congresswoman. >> well we are going to wait and see what the senate does with the proposal that we sent over. of course it was my one year delay of obamacare legislation that was the amendment that went on last night. we think that that is a reasonable request, the president has made 19, he and his administration, 19 delays, there ha

these two crisis-- the shutdown and the debt ceiling-- were discussed at the white house late today by the president and republican leaders. we have reports from both ends of pennsylvania avenue. we're going to go first to major garrett at the white house. major, the meeting just broke up. what's happened? >> reporter: well, scott, this is a very, very fluid situation. white house aides are scrambling at this moment to put together a statement to characterize exactly what went on when the president met with 18 house republicans today. they're not characterizing it in any way right now as either productive or nonproductive. what they are avoiding are terminology of is saying the republican off was rejected by the president. it's clear talks will continue on the subject of day which was not resolving or ending shutdown but trying to find a way to extend the legal authority of the government to borrow to avoid a default. which as said comes due october 17. the republicans came with a proposal to the president to extend borrowing authority for the government until november 22. and we are t

with the debt ceiling deadline there is a sense of urgency. the talks described by both sides constructive though neither side will go into the construction of the talks they did say they'll continue their discussions. also they went to the white house to present their plan to avoid default and end the shutdown. it's proposed by maine senator susan collins. it calls for an immediate end of the government shutdown as well as an increase in the debt ceiling for four months in change for changes on the affordable care act. the white house on friday also reject add plan by house republicans of a short-term increase to the debt ceiling. the white house is looking for a longer term debt ceiling increase that is not tied to budget negotiations and they want an immediate end to the government shutdown. as far as arizona is concerned as you mentioned, they did negotiate to reopen the grand canyon. there is a price tag for that one. $651,000. apparently the cost of doing business at the government shutdown continues. >> adrian peterson, star running bac

be held wednesday to raise the debt ceiling temporarily. why would they do something like this, which might seem at first blush to be backing down. there were a couple of reasons, scott. first of all they looked at polling when they were out there at that retreat it looks like the polling that you were just talking about. it showed that americans by a pretty significant margin trust the president over house republicans when it comes to things like the deficit which is one of their signature issues. and spending and the economy. what republican leaders were trying to convey to some of their more junior members, perhaps who like the idea of really holding the white house's feet to the fire on issues like this, if we want to be seen as a governing party not just an opposition party that is constantly threatening to take the government in to a shutdown or default we are going to have to show that we are reasonable. and the fact is that they are going to hold this vote now and they still get another bite of the apple three months from now to try
